1920s Golden Oak Roll-Top Desk for Sale. $445

Local Pickup Only, Located near Joliet, Illinois

I have for sale a wonderful old golden oak rolltop desk, made by Sabath Desk Co., Chicago, Ill., during the late 1920s. It has a very simple Arts & Crafts/Mission style and a beautiful light oak veneer finish, almost a tiger oak finish.

The desk is large, 60" wide and 36" deep. The work surface is at 30", and the back rises 13" above it. The side drawers are 14" wide, and the kneehole is 22" wide by 25" tall. There are 6 drawers, 5 on the sides and a pencil drawer in the middle. One of the side drawers is double deep for files. The top contains a cubby-hole unit with slots, holes, and 1 hole with a door (a second hole has a partial door - the hardware is still there so it can be rebuilt). A pull-out shelf is above each set of side drawers.

The desk is in excellent condition. The veneer is thick and there are few flaws in it. The rolltop and drawers works smoothly, except for the file drawer, which a broken runner (easily repaired). The broken runner has carved a "V" into its seat, but this is not visible when the drawer is closed and won't interfere with drawer operation with proper repair.

Some dividers are missing, probably about half of the them from both the drawers and cubby-holes, but that means also that half of them are still present.

The rolltop lock is intact, but I have no key. The pencil drawer lock is missing altogether.

The brass drawer handles and feet are all present and original. I doubt that the finish is original.

The desk is very attractive and functional. These have become very expensive, and it is hard to find one in this condition, with a rolltop that works so well.

A desk like this normally retails in the $1000 range. My asking price is $445.
